Substance Abuse

  • Are you concerned about your use of alcohol or other substances?
  • Do you find that you sometimes consume more than you intended to, or for longer periods of time than you had planned?
  • Are your personal relationships being impacted by things you do or say while under the influence?
  • Are you missing work or experiencing decreased job performance because of missed days, hangovers or using on the job?
  • Maybe you have health consequences from using a substance - even nicotine - but can't seem to shake the habit?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, I can help. I have worked extensively in the field of substance abuse and addiction, and will assist you to evaluate whether or not you want to make a change in your relationship to alcohol or other drugs, and then help you figure out how to do that. For some people, that means a choice to completely stop using a substance; this is what is known as an "abstinence based" model, which can be either secular (LifeRing, Women For Sobriety, SMART Recovery, etc) or spiritually based (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, etc). For other individuals, simply reducing the amount you drink or use, or setting limits around when you will use ("I will stop drinking by 10pm so that I can get a good night's rest.") is enough of a change to make significant improvement in your quality of life. This is known as harm reduction .

What kind of change you make - or if you make one at all - is 100% your choice . But most people find that identifying a problem or making changes is very hard to do in isolation. I will assist you to sort through the questions and concerns you may have, and then provide practical support and resources that will help you to implement any changes you desire.
